Batteries: Powering Safe Preparedness
When disaster strikes—be it a power outage, flood, or severe storm—being prepared makes all the difference. At WINMAR®, we know that having the right supplies on hand is essential for safety and peace of mind. From daily convenience to emergency preparedness, batteries keep us powered when it matters most.
Batteries Are Essential
Batteries power the tools and devices that keep your household running during an emergency. From flashlights and radios to smoke alarms and medical devices, reliable batteries can mean the difference between staying safe and being left in the dark. Stock a variety of battery types (AA, AAA, D, 9V, and specialty) to ensure you’re ready for anything.
Battery Fire Risks
While batteries are incredibly useful, they can also pose a fire hazard if not handled and stored properly. Damaged, old, or improperly stored batteries—especially lithium-ion and 9V batteries—can short-circuit, overheat, and catch fire.
Common Causes of Battery Fires:
Contact with metal objects: Loose batteries in drawers can touch keys, coins, or other batteries, causing a short circuit.
Physical damage: Crushed, dented, punctured, or swollen batteries are more likely to overheat.
How to Prevent Battery Fires
- Store batteries in their original packaging or cover the terminals with electrical tape to prevent contact with metal objects, including other batteries.
- Keep batteries in a dry place at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight and sources of extreme temperatures, hot or cold.
- Don’t mix old and new batteries in the same device.
- Regularly check for signs of damage—dispose of dented, swollen, leaking, or corroded batteries safely.
- Batteries are considered hazardous waste; do not dispose of them with household waste. Recycle batteries properly at local collection points.
