How to Prepare for a Flood
Flooding can happen unexpectedly, causing severe damage to properties in a short amount of time. At WINMAR®, we understand the serious impact water damage can have on a home. Taking proactive steps can help minimize damage and speed up recovery from a water-related event.
Know Your Flood Risk
It’s important to understand the difference between flash floods—sudden, intense flooding caused by heavy rainfall—and areas that are more chronically prone to flooding due to geography or infrastructure. Flood risk varies across Canada, with coastal regions, river valleys, and urban areas with poor drainage facing unique challenges. Be aware of how prone to flooding your area is by reviewing floodplain maps or local government resources.
Create an Emergency Plan
Have an evacuation plan in place and ensure all family members know what to do in case of a flood. To avoid water damage, keep important emergency contacts and documents in an easily accessible and elevated space.
Protect Your Property
- Elevate Electrical Systems: Raise electrical outlets, circuit breakers, and appliances above potential flood levels.
- Seal Cracks & Leaks: Use waterproof sealant to reinforce your foundation and prevent water intrusion.
- Install Sump Pumps and backflow Valves. These devices help divert water away from your property and prevent sewage backup.
- Move Valuables to Higher Ground: If possible, store important documents, electronics, and sentimental items in waterproof containers on the upper floors.
Keep Emergency Supplies Ready
Prepare a flood emergency kit with essentials such as bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and first-aid supplies. As a precaution, include pet food if you have a pet.
Stay Informed
Monitor weather alerts and flood warnings in your area. If a flood is imminent, follow evacuation orders and avoid driving through floodwaters.
