Specialty Recycling – Sustainability
Local recycling programs make it easy and convenient for almost every household to recycle used paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass materials. Leaving essentially all other waste for the garbage and subsequently, the landfill. Unknown to many is how many other things can be recycled! These other products are more difficult to break down and require different processes to become reusable material. Even further, there are seven different types of plastics, of which only two or three are typically accepted and can be recycled through curbside recycling. When the unaccepted plastic products are put in blue boxes for local collection, they end up in the landfill. Countless products have the ability to be recycled, but need to go through different channels to do so. Many companies and initiatives are dedicated to keeping as much waste out of landfills as possible by collecting, extracting, and breaking down raw materials that are then able to be turned into new products from “hard-to-recycle” goods.
- Makeup and beauty product containers can be dropped items such as tubes and bottles from mascara, lipstick, skincare, eyeshadow palettes, foundation bottles, pumps, and more!
- Oral care products and packaging can be recycled; items such as toothpaste bottles and caps, dental flossers, dental floss and mouthwash containers, toothbrushes, and toothbrush heads.
- Essentially all old, used, or broken electronics can be recycled; items such as displays, drones, microphones, speakers, printers, printer cartridges, phones, cameras, headphones, video games, video game systems, and computers.
- Mattresses can be taken apart to separate different types of material, and then individual materials can be recycled. Many other companies and depots across Canada offer mattress and furniture recycling.
- Many building materials can be recycled through many public and private centers all over Canada. Shingles, concrete, metals like iron, copper, or steel, ceramic and porcelain products, wood, bricks, some plastics, and drywall are all examples of building materials that can be recycled.
Before throwing items straight into the trash, research what recycling programs are available in your area for specific types of products. There are already so many people across Canada who are working to reduce our environmental impact by implementing specialty recycling programs. As the demand for more sustainable waste alternatives grows, the more common these resources will become.
These recycling efforts are not always easy; they require more time and effort on our part. However, we must take these extra steps because once we are aware of these resources, we can utilize them to make a positive impact on the environment. Making conscious choices towards sustainability and an environmentally friendly future is a responsibility we all share. At WINMAR®, we are committed to a sustainable future, corporately and for the communities we service.
