Cottage Life – Reconnect and Renovate?
Ahhh, summer… the ideal time of year to gather with friends and family in cottage country! Enjoying time away from the hustle and bustle of city life, the daily routine and for many, a time to reconnect with loved ones and extended family.
For the last two years keeping one another safe has been a top priority of everyone. The need for peace, tranquility and the restorative force of nature is much desired as we slowly move towards a new normal. For others, this summer is the perfect time to entertain family and friends at the cottage to reconnect and renew our ties of family and friendship. Making new memories and enjoying all that our vast country has to offer, whether it is for the weekend or an extended stay – make the most of it.
Inspect then Relax
Everyone is eager to launch into relaxation-mode upon arrival. Taking a few minutes for a safety walk around will ensure that your stay is safe and restful. Test and ensure smoke alarms are in working order. Check for any water-related damage, especially since mould may be present in any indoor area where moisture is present. Inspect caulking around windows and doors and check to see if there are any openings that may permit access for rodents.
In some cases, vacations become working vacations – building decks, fences or docks . If planning to renovate a cottage, cabin or boathouse constructed prior to 1980, be certain to test for the possibility of asbestos in insulation, ceiling tiles, flooring, siding and roofing materials. Disturbing asbestos can cause health related issues due to inhaling airborne asbestos particles. Should asbestos be detected, it is best to leave it to the professionals to safely remove and arrange disposal.
