Vacationing – Unwind with Peace of Mind

With the last few weeks of summer break upon us, take time to regroup and unwind. Enjoy the lazy days of summer before the kids head back to school and the return of routine. Whether it’s a road trip or a restful week at a cottage there are still precious summer days left to enjoy.

Safe Travels

Make getting to your destination a breeze by scheduling an overall, pre-trip inspection on your vehicle, to ensure there are no breakdowns along the way. Pay attention to weather forecasts and map out enroute rest and texting stops to be more at ease on the road. Taking regular breaks for passengers and pets will allow for a pleasant day of travel for everyone. Plan ahead to prevent the unexpected is always a good idea.

Unplug – to use less energy

Before you set out prepare your home for an extended period away. Programming thermostats to vacation mode or lowering to a comfortable temperature will incur less energy while out of town. Empty dehumidifiers, turning down the hot water heater and shutting off the main water valve will avoid any potential flooding issues, which would be a very unwelcome home event. As well, set programmable timers for lamps in high traffic, visible areas and unplug small appliances or any electronics with an external power supply. Turning down and unplugging will help your home use less energy while on vacation.

Neighbourhood Watch

Asking a family member, a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your home while on extended vacations, will allow them to communicate any possible concerns or unexpected emergencies, such as weather-related storm issues, such as flooding or wind damage. Stay safe online by remaining aware of sharing travel information and photos on social media to alert audiences to extended vacations and empty homes.

By being prepared, you can truly leave your worries behind and enjoy every minute of these last few summer weeks.
