Ways To Reduce Cooling Costs During The Summer

While the warm summer weather has its perks, the bills that come with it are not. Energy bills can increase unexpectedly and overtime can become difficult to manage. Here are some tips on how to cut your cooling costs this summer, and keep your home running efficiently.

Maintain Your Air Conditioner

Is your air conditioner blowing less and less cold air? Take a look at your AC filter – a dirty filter will make your AC unit work twice as hard for half the cold air, all while increasing your bill. By cleaning or replacing your filter at least once a month, you can lower energy consumption by up to 15% and cut your cooling costs. If your property has central air, check that the floor registers are clean, and the evaporator and condenser coils are clear of dirt and debris.

Install Solar Shades

Solar shades stop up to 70% of outside heat penetrating into your home. When your home is generally cooler, you’ll require much less AC throughout the day. Window films & stained glass are another option, but unlike solar shades, they can only do their job if the windows are closed. Solar shades still allow you to enjoy that cool summer breeze.

Buy A New AC Unit

If you have the budget, opt for a new air conditioning unit with a high energy-efficiency ratio, or one that is Energy Star-qualified. They use around 8% less energy, which saves money on utilities while reducing your carbon footprint. However, it’s still important to stay on top of maintenance and cleanliness as we mentioned.

Switch Your Window Treatments

Utilize highly reflective, light-coloured blinds and shades to reduce the heat coming into your house, and keep them drawn all day if possible. The lighter the hue, the more they will reflect the sun’s rays. Additionally, investing in insulated or reflective shades will reduce heating costs when the winter comes around.

Install A Ceiling Fan

A ceiling fan creates a wind-chill effect which makes your home instantly feel cooler. In case you’re also using an air conditioner, the fan will help to disperse the cool air more efficiently.

Get Your Roof Repaired

A lot of ice, snow, and winter winds can take a toll on your roof. Even minor roof damage can cause you thousands of dollars in repairs throughout your home if it’s not taken care of right away.
